TBR Day. Extreme Exposure / Pamela Clare. 2005


I actually remember where and when I bought this book. I was in Pittsburgh with my sister in May 2009 attending Quilt Market, the quilting industry's trade show. There was a book store near our hotel and while I had, up to that point, read books 2 and 3 in Pamela Clare's I-Team series, I had never read the first one. So I snapped it up, intending to read it right away. OK, so that plan didn't work so well. But since this is PNR/RS month, it was clearly time to read Kara and Reece's story.

Kara McMillan works as an investigative reporter for a Denver newspaper. Clare writes what she knows here, as a former reporter herself. The inside look at journalism in this book, and the whole series, is interesting and Clare manages to incorporate the details without going overboard. Anyhow, as the book opens Kara meets State Senator Reece Sheridan at a bar that she goes to with a friend one evening after work. Despite the influence of too many margaritas, Kara makes quite an impression on Reece and he drops her off at home intending to see her again. Kara, who is also a single mom, isn't so sure she's ready to get involved with anyone.

The next day she gets a tip about a plant committing serious environmental violations. As she begins to investigate, it's clear she's stirring up a hornet's nest. Someone is intent on making sure Kara stops her investigation.

As Kara's investigation goes further, so does her relationship with Reece. I think there's a very nice balance here between the suspense and the romance. Because of Reece's role in the state senate, it turns out that he has ties to Kara's investigation. Ultimately, her life and Reece's are put in jeopardy the closer she gets to the truth.

As is typical with the books that follow, Clare put a ton of action into this book. I literally didn't want to put it down until I was finished. It was fun to meet the characters who show up here and there in the books that come after. Now I think I want to go back and re-read Hard Evidence and (my favorite) Unlawful Contact. I thoroughly enjoyed this and I'm so glad Clare is writing more in the series. The next one is due in May 2013.

    Sounds like an exciting story! I don't read RS but I should--they're contemporary romances with lots of danger and thrills!

    One of the aspects of this TBR challenge that I'm enjoying is hearing how everyone acquired their book selection. I like how your story this month revolves around both quilting and books! Yay!

      Have you read Clare's historicals? She puts lots of danger and thrills in those too. And thanks, I thought it was fun, too, that this book in particular was purchased at a quilting event :)

    Phyl, Extreme Exposure is the book that got me hooked on this series by Pamela Clare. I remember loving Reece! I wasn't crazy about Hard Evidence, but loved Unlawful Contact. I think it was the 4th book that broke the spell for me (can't remember the name?). Anyway, I need to get back to Clare.

      I remember that quite a few people didn't like the 4th book. I'd have to look the title up. I've enjoyed them all to varying degrees. Enough that I've stuck with the series. The last one was very intense, which I liked very much.

    I enjoy this series too, some books more than others but would certainly recommend it.

    I had to laugh when you mentioned how you bought it, intending to read it right away. I do that all the time! Which is why I have such a big tbr pile. lol

I'm one of those people who constantly moves from project to project. I do finish things, but midway through one project I'll stop and pull out fabric to start another one. Or something will come up that makes me start in on something else--a challenge, a class, a need to make a gift, or a new fabric purchase. All of those things change my focus. 57, 3, 15

57 years. 3 months. 15 days. That's how old my sister was when she died on December 30, 2015. Char spent four and a half years in a tug of war with cancer. For a while there she seemed to be in total control. But that insidious disease came back and this time would not let up. Here's the kicker. She had uterine cancer, just like me. Only hers was Stage 4 when they found it. Mine barely qualified as Stage 1. Life is often unfair, but that seemed the cruelest irony of all. As I wept that she was dying, she wept because I was not. It's taken me a long time to process this and to be willing to talk openly about it. Some of you reading this have been very open with your own struggles with health, grief, death, and dying. TBR Day. Conor's Way / Laura Lee Guhrke. 1996

Back in the early 2000's, when I began lurking at the old AAR  boards, I heard talk of this book. And according to Amazon, I apparently broke down and purchased a copy for myself via Marketplace in 2004 for a "mere" $4.75. Today a used print copy goes for about $25. I don't know why I waited so long to read it. I'd keep seeing references to how good it is, especially from KristieJ who has been nagging our TBR hostess to read it forever. I think I was saving it for a day when I knew I needed to read a really good book. But when I saw that this month's theme was "Recommended Read" it was clear that this was the book I had to read. I was really, really stupid to wait 8 years to read this. Frankly, I should just end this review with that statement. I am writing this Tuesday evening. Earlier today I saw on Twitter that at least 2 other TBR participants are reviewing this for today as well. And they'll probably do a better job at it than me. B
