Phyl's 5 Phaves from May

May was the month of The Quilt of Many Squares. Seriously, just about every spare minute I had was spent working on that thing--assuming I had the energy. I didn't read much, or when I did it was late in the evening or on breaks at work. Sadly, I look back and don't remember a whole lot about these, but I do know that I enjoyed them and they were a welcome respite from sewing deadlines and trying to get The Teen to finish the school year on a positive note. It was a brutal month.

5. Harper's Bride by Alexis Harrington. I can't remember what prompted me to purchase this for my Kindle, but I'm awfully glad I did. It was originally published in 1997 and it would appear that most (if not all) of Harrington's back list is in e-book form. Melissa Logan marries Coy Logan to escape her abusive family, only to find herself dragged off to the Yukon gold rush and then sold to shopkeeper Dylan Harper to pay a debt. Melissa cooks and cleans for Dylan, and even starts her own laundry business. This character-driven story is very touching as Melissa and Dylan fall in love. The backdrop of the Yukon gold rush makes for an interesting and unusual setting. I liked this well enough that I went back and purchased another of her books, Home by Morning. You should visit her website. It's very pretty.

4. His Wife for One Night by Molly O'Keefe. This book was my May TBR Challenge book. This modern-day marriage of convenience story was well-done and believable. I'm still looking forward to the sequel, but O'Keefe's website doesn't say when it'll be out yet.

3. Undeniably Yours by Shannon Stacey. The 2nd book in Stacey's Kowalski family series has a plot that sounds a bit like an HP: a one-night stand leads to an unplanned pregnancy. Beth stubbornly wants to remain independent, but Kevin is patient. What makes this book appealing is Stacey's writing, the humor, and the extended Kowalski family. I'm looking forward to the additional books planned for this series

1. (tie) One Magic Moment and One Enchanted Evening by Lynn Kurland. When I saw that Kurland's 2011 time travel release, OMM was out, I realized I had never read OEE, her 2010 TT. Kurland's TT fantasy world has long been a favorite of mine; I enjoy her writing and the extensive world of characters who go back and forth from medieval England or Scotland to modern times. I ended up reading these two books back-to-back as they involve 2 sisters who become involved with 2 de Piaget brothers. Great fun and I am guessing the next book involves a 3rd Alexander sister. I just have to wait until next May--which is now only 8 months away!

Whew. Now to remember what I read in June.

  1. Ah, your May favorites! Moving right along... LOL! ; )

I have Shannon Stacey's Kowalski Brothers series on my wish list. One day I'll just download them all to my ipad and read them straight through!

    Maybe.

  2. LOL! I have a partial draft for June and ... September! Yep, now I'm trying to write as I read. We'll see how that goes.

And I hope you get to try the Kowalski brothers soon. They're awfully fun. Shannon Stacey has a great sense of humor.

  7. LOL, I was just waiting for the inning to be over to come over. That grand slam was hit right after I finished posting my comment! Incredible 6th inning. I'm hoping the rain and the Yanks hold. *g*

  9. Thanks, Hilcia! Sort of a shock after that great season, but the bats went dead. Not much to say. Spring training's a long way off, isn't it?
